Canada Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of Literacy requirement

  2. 40 hours of community involvement. (Here is Community Involvement Activity Notification and Completion Form)

  3. 30 credits required for graduation (18 compulsory and 12 optional):

  • 4 English, one per grade level (check extra notes below)

  • 1 French as a second language

  • 3 Mathematics, at least one in Grade 11 or 12

  • 2 Science

  • 1 Canadian geography

  • 1 Canadian history

  • 1 Arts (dance, drama, media, music, visual arts)

  • 1 Health and physical education

  • 0.5 Civics

  • 0.5 Career studies

  • Plus one credit from each of the following groups:

    • Group 1:

      • an additional English credit or French as a second language (check extra notes below)
      • or a Native Language
      • or Classic or an International language
      • or a Social Sciences and Humanities credit
      • or a Canadian and World Studies credit
      • or a Guidance and Career education credit
      • or a Cooperative education credit (check extra notes below)
    • Group 2:

      • Business Studies credit
      • or a credit in Health and Physical Education
      • or a credit in the Arts
      • or a credit in Cooperative education
      • or French as a second language (check extra notes below)
    • Group 3:

      • a Grade 11 or 12 Science credit
      • or computer studies
      • or a Technological Studies credit
      • or a Cooperative education credit
      • or French as a second language (check extra notes below)
  • plus 12 option credit

Notes:

*A maximum of 3 credits in English as a second language (ESL) or English literacy development (ELD) may be counted towards the 4 compulsory credits in English, but the fourth must be a credit earned for a Grade 12 compulsory English course.

**In groups 1, 2, and 3, a maximum of 2 credits in French as a second language can count as compulsory credits, one from group 1 and one from either group 2 or group 3.

***A maximum of 2 credits in cooperative education can count as compulsory credits.

†The 12 optional credits may include up to 4 credits earned through approved dual credit courses.
